Spotted together

Logan and Lyric were spotted at home in the same vicinity. No word yet as to what caused this unnatural phenomenon, as typically the two siblings are at odds with one another, vying for mama and dada's attention. "She wanted to eat his nose," an eye-witness said, "and he let her." Mama and Daddy are still recovering at the local psych ward. "And I was just getting used to him throwing trucks at her," the dad said groggily as the nurse injected him with thorazine.

Tuxedo Kyle

Logan and Lyric's cousin, Kyle, was spotted in the wild wearing Logan's old tuxedo that Nana bought for him at the flea market a while back for my sister Kate's wedding. I say he looks pretty handsome! EDIT: Ok, I messed up here--as more than one family member alerted me to. This was not the same tuxedo Nana gave Logan. It came from... I forget!

Happy Easter

Happy Easter! Not much happening around here today. Rach made some killer pancakes for breakfast, and I overcooked the chicken for dinner.

March 24, 2009 Ly making more music

For whatever reason, Lyric seems happiest when she's on the diaper table. You may think there's some scatological explanation for that, but I don't know. Sometimes when she's crying we just put her there, and she quiets down, smiles, gets all gigglish. The magic diaper table?

On the other hand, the Loganman tends to want to dictate where he wants his diaper changed :) Lately, it's been under the goal net that Uncle Adam gave him for his birthday.

You think you know Bo? You don't know Bo. Now me--I know Bo.

March 23, 2009 Logan's puzzling

Logan is becoming pretty good at puzzles. What I really like watching is his critical thinking skills--the way he examines a piece, then looks at the board, assesses, tries, tries again, tries another piece, turns until he gets the one that fits. Pretty cool. Baby Lyric has got some catching up to do!

Kasey and Logan played at the park by the river last weekend--it warmed up enough for a day.

Hot chocolate!

Logan and I on Sunday went outside to play in the snow. It barely snowed, but it was sticky, and we rolled a snowman. Lucky for me this was Logan's first real snowman and had no clue that daddy made it wrong: huge body, and a tiny, mashed head. Really, it wasn't my fault--the snow kept breaking up. Then we came inside and had some hot chocolate, in which Logan was very pleased to partake.

Lyric goes from "Squeaker" to "Ogre"

Lyric's vocal chord seems to be repairing itself fine. While of course this is good news, as two parents with chronic sleep deprivation (CSD), I don't think we would've been offended if it, eh, took a little longer to heal? Boy, she can crank it up--grunting, moaning, crying--she's like a tiny ogre! Step aside, Shrek.

Logan's art moving along

Logan is beginning to draw shapes now--his favorite happens to be a football. Here's a good one (Daddy's is on the left; Logan's on the right).

30 Jan, 2009 Sample squeaks

I recorded Lyric squeaking a little in her sleep. She squeaks with more pizazz when she's nursing, but, well, you know.

Jan 29, 2009 Lyric takes a bath at home

Lyric took her first bath at home this past week. Logan helped out, too. He's still getting used to her. He likes her as an object--as something to touch and poke and hold and smooch--but he is also acting out more than usual. Rach and I plan on letting him get more involved with her--maybe he can pick out her clothes, etc. We'll see how that goes.

Despite his sister being the new kid in town, Logan is certainly still up for a little playtime.

Update on Lyric: she's just a squeaker

Our pediatrician saw Lyric yesterday. His examination was non-descript, really. He checked her reflexes, weighed and measured her, etc—all in all, she’s healthy; she even gained back her birth weight. He of course heard the strider in her throat—that which we were told was tracheomalacia. He referred us to a pediatric pulmonologist for further investigation.

However, upon speaking with an old friend of mine, who happens to be a pediatric ENT doctor, we discovered that tracheomalacia is rare in newborns. What is more common is larynomalacia, essentially a “floppy” windpipe due to immature cartilage. But, he said, that may not even be what she has—you need to get a camera into her throat to see what’s going on. There could be a cyst, scar tissue, anything.

The soonest we could get into the pulmonologist was March. As fortune would have it, we got an appointment in the city with a recommended ENT doctor for today at 5pm. Someone had canceled and we slipped in. We didn’t even have to pull strings.

It turns out she has no kind of malacia whatsoever. Her right vocal chord is stretched a little, making it weak. Moreover, the condition is aggravated by acid reflux (the doctor saw the bits of milk in her throat—yuck). So the sounds she is making have nothing to do with a breathing problem, which is great news. The condition should resolve itself within a month, the doctor said.

Until then, she’ll just squeak :)

Jan 24, 2009 Lyric and Rach come home

Lyric and Rach came home this morning. They were originally going to be discharged yesterday, but the nurse practitioners wanted to keep Lyric another day for observation. Plus, they didn't have the results of the pneumonia test, which eventually came back negative. Good stuff.

She's a real squeaker--mostly because of the problem with her windpipe. The medical term for her condition is tracheomalacia. Lyric's tracheal cartilage will mature in a couple of months. We will see our pediatrican on Monday to get his evaluation.

Meanwhile...

January 22, 2009: The Birth of Lyric

Hey everyone, here are some pics and videos from our daughter Lyric's birth. Lyric Alexis O'Connor was born on January 22, 2009, at 1:31 am. 7 pounds, 3.8 ounces. 19" inches long. We're all wicked exhausted. The labor wasn't as long as Logan's, but no less intense. It lasted "only " 5 hours. Rach was initially allowed to use the water tub, but later had to forfeit the option of a water birth because of a meconium issue. The only drug she used for pain was a little Nubain (though we were scheduled for an interthecal; Lyric descended before it could be issued). Much kudos to Rach for her bravery.

Lyric is generally healthy. There are one or two outstanding issues that have us worried. She has trouble breathing (some of this is due to the meconium. She came out so fast that the normal process of being squeezed through the birth canal didn't have much effect on clearing the bronchial and nasal passages). After an X-ray and several blood tests, the initial diagnosis was a possible hole in her lung. But further X-rays were inconclusive. Her blood oxygen and gas levels got better, which further obscured the cause of the problem (as it seemed she was getting enough O2). She did not cry after birth; she did not cry when prodded by nurses; she did not cry when poked by needles; she did not cry after a bath. Finally, this evening, when she did cry, it sounded as though she couldn't get enough breath; in fact, it sounded like her throat was collapsing. The pediatrician in the unit examined her and determined that her windpipe is "soft." Basically, we were right in our interpretation of the noise--her windpipe partially collapses when she breathes in too heavily, as with crying. He believes the problem will resolve itself in a few months. We will follow up with our normal doctor this week.

Rach is scheduled to go home tomorrow. Thanks to all the family--Nancy and Kasey, Adam, Jody, and baby Kyle, Gramma Pretzel, and Lucy--for all your help. We will try to give you the latest on Lyric soon!

Hey, daddy, think you can carry these for me?

ICE CREAM, MMMMMM (and Daddy almost didn't let me have it--that's why I made him carry all those balls for me up above).

Only audio here folks! Logan sings himself to sleep reciting, eh, his "ABD's." Isn't that the label you get when you've almost finished your Ph.D.?

Jan 3, 2009

Logan really enjoyed blowing out the candles at his birthday party, which was the Saturday before his actual birthday. Lots of his friends showed up, too. Mama made a football carrot cake with cream cheese and sugar frosting. A big hit with the Loganator.
